Elliptic Technologies End-to-end DTCP+ Content Protection Solutions Selected by TP Vision

By

It has been a busy couple of weeks for Ottawa, Canada-based embedded content protection solutions provider Elliptic Technologies

At the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC), the company announced the unveiling of tVault™PLUS, which combines multiple DRM and link protection schemes for mobile and connected devices. Integrated with Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) such that of part, it offers service providers, devices manufacturers and chipset vendors the ability to leverage partner Trustonic’s popular  ‹t-base TEE to provide device manufacturers with a hardware-isolated space that service providers can harness to provide secure content delivery from the studio to the consumer. It is ideal in fact for secure access to premium content including 4K Ultra-High Definition video.

In fact, the ability to provide secure content for next gen TV leads to the second reason the company commands attention. TP Vision, developer, manufacturer and marketer of Philips branded TV sets,  has selected  tVault™ for end-to-end Digital Transmission Content Protection over Internet Protocol (DTCP-IP) security solutions to protect the streaming and sharing of premium content for those next gen smart TVs. This is something that is more than worth noting.

Assuring the future with DTCP-IP

For those not familiar, DTCP-IP is a technical standard specified and licensed by the Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator (DTLA).  It protects audiovisual content, when transmitted between digital entertainment products, against unauthorized copying, interception and tampering, while ensuring that content can be viewed and copied on home networked devices.  It is seen as essential to Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) content protection standards. These are foundational in that they set guidelines for home network interconnection of digital audiovisual devices and PCs from different vendors so they can easily share multiple media content.

“In the rapidly evolving world of visual digital entertainment, Elliptic’s DTCP+ solutions offered exactly what we were looking for in terms of leadership in embedded security,”  said Frank De Grave, Director of Purchasing at TP Vision. “We required solutions that were readily deployable, field-proven and compliant with the latest DLNA standards that would integrate seamlessly with our extensive TV product lines including smart TVs with DLNA Media Playback.”

"Our collaboration with TP Vision is an important indicator that our solutions are recognized as industry leading as well as trusted to integrate seamlessly into the latest advancements in connected consumer products such as smart TVs,” commented Vijay Dube, President and CEO of Elliptic Technologies. “Our DTCP+ customers and industry partners driven by the rapid growth in connected home entertainment devices require our products to be not only compliant with the latest content protection standards, but also deployed rapidly and effectively in a variety of applications.”

Elliptic offers an extensive portfolio of end-to-end Content Protection Solutions built around tVault™ for HDCP 2.2 used in Miracast, HDMI and Display Port applications, DTCP-IP and DRM  for Microsoft® PlayReady®.  In a world fraught with problems of audiovisual unauthorized copying, interception and tampering, how to protect content has become an industry priority.  After all content creators and their delivery partners are losing billions of dollars every year already. The problem is becoming exponentially exacerbated with the explosion of smartphones, tablets, home theaters, and car infotainments systems as multimedia viewing platforms.

The challenge has been since the inception of industry attempts to come up with a strong digital rights management capability that enables all legitimate members of the content provider ecosystem to optimize the value of their products and services that strong enforcement could lead to consumer backlash. The trick is to provide content provider protection in a non-intrusive way that affords the protection required but allows all of us to enjoy reasonable use of the content.

Embedded solutions are clearly a path that makes sense because of their ability to provide protection as well as automating and making easier the ways in which that protection is achieved.  And, because of the flexibility offered by adding features to resource constrained TEEs, looking toward the future by embedding such capabilities in what are sure to be very popular devices, ranging from smart TVs but also virtually any device as the Internet of Things (IoT) evolves, is why DTCP-IP solutions are going to proliferate.  Content providers need protection and customers do as well along with the flexibility of not just second-screen utility but any screen when, where and how they want it.
