A Closer Look at the New Nokia Experiences Software, New Nokia Lumia Tablet and Smartphone Specifications

By

Earlier this morning, at Nokia World being held in Abu Dhabi this time around, the company announced what looks to us to be some very interesting and appealing new mobile devices.  This included a new and solid-looking Windows 8.1 RT 10.1 inch tablet, the Lumia 2520; and two new large format smartphones, the Lumia 1520 and 1320 - each of which boasts a six inch screen. We've provided the details for the new devices and highlighted some new software features in an earlier article.

We did however leave out the specification lists for the new hardware due to space constraints. For those among us who must have these details, we've provided them here. They immediately follow the discussion below of the new Nokia third party software for Lumia hardware we were not able to detail in the earlier article.

Nokia delivered a fairly wide range of third-party applications to enhance user experiences with the newly announced Lumia tablet and smartphones. DreamWorks Animation, Flipboard, Electronic Arts, Vine and WhatsApp are chief among leading developers who have built new applications these larger screen Lumia devices.

We can also - finally - expect to see the enormously popular photo and video sharing application Instagram put in an appearance as the Instagram platform is formally arriving for the Windows Phone mobile OS in the coming weeks. This is an important addition to WP8 - one that in fact may very well spur a lot of new converts - especially given Nokia's imaging capabilities.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram's CEO and co-founder says, "Our ultimate goal is to bring Instagram to everyone who wants to use it. We're looking forward to watching the Windows Phone community use Instagram to capture and share beautiful moments in the coming weeks." We're glad to see Instagram take the leap to WP8. In addition to the third party vendors, Nokia itself also unveiled its own very interesting new collection of applications. These include Nokia Storyteller, Nokia Video Director and Nokia Beamer. All of them rely in good part on taking advantage of Nokia's latest imaging innovation and deep integration with HERE Maps to allow users to capture, share and re-live memories.

Bryan Biniak, vice president and general manager, Developer Experience at Nokia elaborates further on this particular aspect of what Nokia refers to as "Nokia Experiences" saying, "Consumers are increasingly demanding high-quality, life-enhancing applications. We've collaborated closely with Microsoft and top developers from around the world to deliver unique app experiences, extending the boundaries of innovation for our ecosystem. With our new Lumia devices, Nokia specifically seeks to empower developers to leverage our latest tools and investments to deliver ground-breaking app experiences that truly delight consumers. T is important as well that these apps drive increased revenue opportunities for all developers - we're looking to deliver on both sides in order to create a highly sustainable Lumia app environment."

In addition to the Windows Phone 8 Update 3 - which the Lumia devices are the first to support in real devices, Nokia will ensure that Windows Phone developers have additional opportunities available to them. Starting today, Nokia announced that it will provide developers with a new set of design, development and troubleshooting tools specifically targeting developer productivity for building applications for Windows Phone.

As of today's Nokia announcements Windows Phone owners can also download various new applications that include CamScanner, Goal Live Scores, InNote, phriz.be, Rail Rush, SophieLensHD and an updated TuneIn Radio application with radio stations live on the Start screen. In addition, over the next few weeks users can experience many more new applications that will include among them, ESPN F1, EA SPORTS(TM) FIFA 14, Papyrus, Temple Run 2, Vine, Vyclone Pro and Xbox Video. Some of these are mobile device staples that have long needed to be on WP8, so it is certainly good to see them begin to appear.

Nokia Video Director, also coming soon to the Lumia 2520, allows users to easily transfer videos from smartphone to tablet, and features simplified editing tools to create and share self-styled short films in minutes. It is, really, quite a useful app to add to a tablet.

The Larger Screen Lumia App Advantages

The new Lumia devices - whether the 2520 tablet or the 1520 and 1320 6 inch smartphones - work in direct concert with the important new updates provided in WP8 Update 3. The new updates specifically support full 1080p HD video, which both the Lumia 1520 Lumia 2520 deliver on. Aside from the benefits that consumers will gain here the new capability simply gives developers a much more sophisticated platform from which to deliver unique experiences for consumers. This is critical for WP* - it has been playing catch-up here and no longer needs to.

Dragons Adventure, for example, is a unique entertainment experience built in partnership with DreamWorks Animation. Originally inspired by the award-winning 3D animated film 'How to Train Your Dragon,' it allows such things as, say, a simple family drive to be transformed into an actual interactive gaming experience.

Built specifically for the Nokia Lumia 2520, the game incorporates a companion mode that allows other players to participate by using their Lumia smartphones to create missions, change the action and add new challenges. The game uses Nokia's HERE Maps and LiveSight technology to transform actual landmarks along a drive into the fictional Isle of Berk.

Jim Mainard, head of digital strategy for DreamWorks Animation notes that, "Roadways, buildings, lakes, and even real-life traffic and weather conditions are mirrored into the game, personalizing it and transforming the drive into a captivating adventure. Thanks to the incredible innovation of the Nokia team, we can now give families the tools to transform their world into the fantastical world of How to Train Your Dragon, one of our most beloved films. Dragons Adventure is leading a whole new evolution of what a mobile app can deliver. More importantly - it's a whole lot of fun. I've played it and am completely hooked."

As a final example of new possibilities, it is quite useful to point out that Flipboard, the hugely popular personal magazine app that allows people to read and collect the news they care about while providing the critical ability to curate their favorite stories into their own magazines - we ourselves would be totally lost without it - is now Available as well. Flipboard will be available for the Lumia 2520 when it goes on sale and for the rest of the Lumia smartphone family in the coming months.

"Today, we're excited for everyone to see Flipboard on the new Nokia Lumia 2520," says Eric Feng, Flipboard's CTO. "Nokia, with their commitment to creating world-class user experiences, was a key partner for us bringing Flipboard to the Windows 8 platform for the first time. Lumia 2520 users can instantly read their favorite news or create their own Flipboard magazines on any topic imaginable. We look forward to bringing Flipboard to Lumia smartphones in the coming months."

We are not overstating the case when we note that these are important new software events - not only for Nokia (soon to be owned by Microsoft, of course), but for the entire WP8 ecosystem. A rich ecosystem is a critical foundation for growth and as hard as Microsoft has worked to build it, to date it has continued to lag behind iOS and Android. The new apps and the new WP8 upgrades take the ecosystem a significant step forward.
