Twitter to Join Online Music World with App Launch Alongside Coachella Weekend

By

Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Songza, Grooveshark, SoundCloud, YouTube, VEVO and Myspace Music. These are just some of the many online music services available today that stream music of all genres to millions of users.

This weekend, we’ll see Twitter Music added to the mix.

Twitter acquired music discovery service We Are Hunted last year and is using its technology to build a standalone music app. It will offer suggestions for personalized playlists and stations based on different accounts that Twitter users follow and will also feature tabs based on what’s trending and emerging artists. Users can follow artists on Twitter directly from Twitter Music – musicians already make up some of the most popular accounts, some with tens of millions of followers.

Users can listen to songs via streams from SoundCloud and music videos from VEVO, and the service will give users the option to buy tracks via iTunes.

According to CNET, We Are Hunted employees have been using the #NowPlaying hashtag frequently on Twitter in what they believe is a test for a forthcoming app.

However, Ryan Seacrest made a less-subtle revelation of the service with these tweets below.

According to AllThingsD, Twitter sources confirm the app is launching this weekend alongside music festival Coachella, but it may not be today. The site music.twitter.com is up with a live homepage, so we’ll see when it starts navigating users to the new service.
